“East of the river.” That is what Gangdong literally means. Today we find ourselves in Songnae-dong. This area is one of the districts that make up the city of Seoul. Gangdong-gu is on the east side of the city.

Gangdong District has a long history. There is a prehistoric site in Amsa-dong. It is about six thousand years old. You can find many potteries and houses. The pottery is made of ceramic. It is circular and shaped like corn.
The Jungbu Express Motorway starts here. It passes through Sangil-dong. This is at the east end of Gangdong District.
Gangdong-gu is home to several parks. They protect the native ecology. You can find waterways and wetlands here. Gildong Ecological Park is one of them. It protects a restored wetland. It is home to many native species. You can learn about the local ecology. There is an outdoor exhibition space. You can also enjoy the views. Visit the observation deck for wetland views.
Amsa Ecological Park is northwest of Gangdong-gu. It is a popular place to watch migratory birds. There are beautiful reed groves. Willows grow on the banks of the Han River. Wild roses and tiger lilies bloom in the spring. You might see reed warblers, swallows, and tits. Scarlet-colored hairstreak butterflies are often seen here too.
Gangdong-gu has many sister cities. These include Fengtai, China, and Kent, United States. They also include Musashino, Japan, and Willoughby, Australia. This shows Gangdong’s global connections.
Getting around Gangdong-gu is easy. It is about an hour from Seoul Station by train. It takes about two hours from Incheon International Airport. Seoul Subway Lines 5 and 8 serve the district. There is also an extensive bus network. Taxis are readily available.
