During the late Goryeo period a prophecy foretold the Lee family’s rise to power in Hanyang. This prophecy. It was written in the Seowungwanbigi. This book spoke of flourishing oak trees beneath Samgaksan Mountain. These trees were seen as an auspicious sign.

Welcome to Songcheon-dong. This neighborhood in Seoul’s Gangbuk District stands on land once associated with that prophecy. You see before you a place deeply rooted in history. Songcheon-dong’s very name echoes this past.

Songcheon-dong’s origins lie in the belief surrounding the Lee family. A team was sent to cut down the sacred oak trees. The area became known as Beolli. This evolved into the name we know today. Songcheon-dong. The area was divided into Upper Middle and Lower Beolli reflecting its geography.

Before its current form Songcheon-dong was two separate dongs Mia-5 and Mia-8. They were merged on June 30 2008. This merger created the Songcheon-dong we know today. Its population in 2008 was 62925 people. It covers 16.93 square kilometers.

Imagine the bustling activity that once filled this area. Picture the woodcutters felling those ancient trees. Envision the villagers going about their daily lives. This was a time of great change and upheaval. A time when the very destiny of a dynasty was at stake. The history of Songcheon-dong is woven into the fabric of Korean history itself.

Today Songcheon-dong remains a vibrant and bustling neighborhood. It is a place where the past meets the present. A testament to the enduring power of prophecy and the resilience of the Korean people. Its story is one of transformation growth and a rich heritage. It is a story that continues to unfold. A story worth remembering. A story worth exploring.
