Did you hear the one about the mountain that’s also a peninsula? That’s Son Tra Mountain for you. It overlooks Da Nang Bay and the East Sea. Locals also call it Monkey Mountain.
Son Tra Mountain wasn’t always a peninsula. Before the 15th century, it was an island with three peaks. The Han River changed that. Its delta and coastal sedimentation created a sand isthmus. This joined the island to the mainland. Now, it’s a peninsula. Water still borders its north, east, and west sides.
This area is more than just a pretty view. It’s a natural reserve. It is home to many endangered species. The red-shanked douc langur is the star here. Over 60% of these primates live on Son Tra Mountain. That’s why some call it Monkey Mountain. The brown-shanked douc langur has increased the value of the Son Tra conservation area. There are about 400 individuals. In 1977, the government made it a nationally protected forest.
At nearly 600 meters high, Ban Co Peak is the highest point. Ban Co means Chessboard in English. Legends say fairies came here to play chess. From here, you can see everything. Da Nang city stretches out below. You can also spot Hai Van Pass, Lien Chieu Bay, and the distant Cham Islands.
During the Vietnam War, the US military used Son Tra Mountain. They had a communications facility here. It was called the Monkey Mountain Facility. Another base, Camp Tien Sha, is now part of the Tien Sa Terminal. Sadly, several aircraft crashed into the mountain during the war.
Linh Ung Pagoda is a must-see spot. It’s the largest pagoda in Central Vietnam. Inside the courtyard stands the Lady Buddha Da Nang statue. It is 67 meters tall making it the tallest Buddha statue in Vietnam. You can see it from almost anywhere in Da Nang.
