Son Tra Mountain wasn’t always a peninsula. Before the 15th century, it was an island with three peaks. The Han River changed that. Its delta and coastal sedimentation created a sand isthmus. This joined the island to the mainland. Now, it’s a peninsula. Water still borders its north, east, and west sides.

This area is more than just a pretty view. It’s a natural reserve. It is home to many endangered species. The red-shanked douc langur is the star here. There are about 400 individuals. In 1977, the government made it a nationally protected forest.

During the Vietnam War, the US military used Son Tra Mountain. They had a communications facility here. It was called the Monkey Mountain Facility. Another base, Camp Tien Sha, is now part of the Tien Sa Terminal. Sadly, several aircraft crashed into the mountain during the war.
