It’s a stark commentary on our times, brought to life by the art collective Subset. Their Climate campaign seeks to jolt us awake, to make us confront the plastic monster we’ve created. This mural, a striking depiction of a fish suffocating in a plastic bag, is their loudest cry yet. It’s their largest mural in Ireland, a testament to the urgency of their message. Subset aimed to force a confrontation with the climate emergency. They chose plastic pollution as their battleground. Why? Because plastic, that ubiquitous material, is nearly indestructible. We churn out 300 million tons of it each year, and it simply refuses to vanish. It fragments, breaks down into microplastics, those insidious particles smaller than 5mm that infiltrate every corner of our world. The Something Fishy Going On mural mirrors these microplastics in its design. Subset’s previous works in Dublin’s Royal Hibernian Academy and even Colorado led to this powerful statement in Temple Bar. This mural stands as a stark reminder of our consumer habits.
