Until it should fill the world again. This is Somerville College’s motto. A powerful statement echoing from its very foundation. Somerville College stands proudly in Oxford a testament to perseverance and progress.

Founded in 1879 as Somerville Hall it was one of Oxford’s first women’s colleges. This was a time when women were largely excluded from higher education. The college’s founders were social liberals. They wanted a non-denominational institution unlike the Anglican Lady Margaret Hall. Somerville College quickly earned a reputation for academic excellence. It became known as the “bluestocking college.” This was because of its impressive examination results. It challenged the belief that women were academically inferior.

The college’s history is full of fascinating details. Did you know that in 1964 it was among the first colleges to stop locking up at night? This was to allow students more freedom. Even more surprising is the fact that no gowns are worn at formal halls. This reflects the college’s liberal ethos.

Somerville College is a place of stunning architecture. Buildings of various styles surround one of Oxford’s largest quads. The library is remarkable. It’s one of Oxford’s largest college libraries housing around 120000 items. Among its treasures is John Stuart Mill’s personal library. This contains many books with his annotations. The Mary Somerville Room is a highlight. It displays paintings by Mary Somerville herself alongside works by famous artists.

During World War I Somerville College was transformed. It became the Third Southern General Hospital. The college’s students were temporarily moved to Oriel College. Notable patients included war poets Robert Graves and Siegfried Sassoon. Their time at Somerville Hospital was somewhat paradisiacal. They later reminisced about their unique experience.

In 1994 a momentous change happened. Somerville College began admitting men. This reflected a broader shift in Oxford’s colleges. It marked a new chapter in the college’s inclusive history. Somerville College has maintained a roughly 50-50 gender balance since then. This is a testament to its ongoing commitment to equality.

The college’s grounds are beautiful. Students can walk on the grass unlike many other Oxford colleges. The gardens boast a variety of plants and trees. They include a significant Indian horse chestnut. This symbolizes the college’s strong ties to India. Notable alumnae include Indira Gandhi India’s first female Prime Minister. Another notable alumna is Margaret Thatcher the United Kingdom’s first female Prime Minister.

Somerville College is more than just buildings and history. It’s a vibrant community. It fosters intellectual curiosity and personal growth. It has a strong sense of community. It is a place that has played a significant role in Oxford’s and the world’s history. It continues to shape future generations. It’s a place that lives up to its motto “Until it should fill the world again”.
