Built in 1914 the Somerville Central Library stands before you. A magnificent example of Renaissance Revival architecture it’s a testament to a bygone era. This impressive yellow brick building wasn’t just thrown up overnight. It was the brainchild of renowned architect Edward Lippincott Tilton. He designed this beauty with funding help from the generous Andrew Carnegie.

Imagine the bustling activity of its opening day December 17 1913. The Somerville Central Library then brand new held the promise of knowledge and enlightenment for all. It reflects how much Somerville values its Central Library. The Children’s Room was later dedicated to Marguerite “Missy” Alice LeHand President Franklin Roosevelt’s secretary.

The building’s history continues to unfold. In 1989 the Somerville Central Library earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognition highlights its architectural and historical significance. The library continues to thrive providing essential services and cultural enrichment to the community.
