In 1952, a vision took root. Admiral Sindh Kamalanavin and Admiral Lek Sumitr saw the need for a dedicated naval hospital. Right here, where Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital now stands, construction began. Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital first opened its doors on March 27, 1957. It was originally called Bukkhalo Naval Hospital. This was a significant moment for the Royal Thai Navy and the community. Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital primarily serves the personnel of the Royal Thai Navy. It also extends its services to the general public. The hospital is located in Thon Buri District in Bangkok, Thailand. It houses the headquarters of the Naval Medical Department (NMD). This makes it a central hub for naval medical operations. Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital isn’t just a place of healing. It’s also a center of learning. It houses a CPIRD Medical Education Center. This center trains medical students for the Faculty of Medicine at Burapha University. The hospital is also affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University. This collaboration strengthens the hospital’s commitment to medical education and research. Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital also plays a crucial role in specialized medical training. It offers several residency programs. These programs include surgery, emergency medicine, and a unique maritime medicine residency program. This is the only program of its kind in Thailand, highlighting the hospital’s specialized focus. The hospital’s name changed on November 11, 1959. It was renamed Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital to honor Viceroy Pinklao. Viceroy Pinklao was the younger brother of King Mongkut and a prominent figure in the 1850s as the commander of the Front Palace Navy. A statue of Viceroy Pinklao stands on the hospital grounds. It was unveiled on January 7, 1966, by King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit. This ceremony further solidified the hospital’s connection to Thai history and royalty. Somdech Phra Pinklao Hospital’s journey from Bukkhalo Naval Hospital reflects its growth and significance in the medical landscape of Thailand.
