Did Axel Ebbe ever imagine his Solrosen would become such a Malmö icon? Here in Kungsparken, Solrosen reaches for the sky. The statue’s Swedish name means “Sunflower”. This bronze figure, perched on a granite plinth, captures a woman with arms outstretched, head tilted back, basking in the sun’s embrace. A sunflower etching graces the plinth, connecting the artwork to its name. Solrosen was created in 1911 by Axel Ebbe, a Swedish sculptor born in Hököpinge in 1868. Ebbe studied under notable artists like Frederick Krebs and Stephan Sinding. He honed his skills in major European cities like Berlin, Vienna, Paris, and London. Malmö’s Kungspark is fortunate to house this beautiful piece. Ebbe created other works displayed throughout Sweden. Solrosen is a testament to his talent and vision. Take a moment to appreciate the smooth curves of the bronze and the sturdy granite base. Imagine Ebbe’s vision coming to life over a century ago. Solrosen remains a timeless piece of art. It continues to inspire awe and wonder in all who visit Kungsparken.
