Solid Rock Mission Church

Gazing upon Solid Rock Mission Church, one can almost hear the echoes of its rich history. This sacred space, located on South Broadway in Los Angeles, has been a cornerstone of faith and community since its inception in 1957. Solid Rock Mission Church wasn’t always at this location. The congregation originally gathered at 4818 S. Avalon. They remained there for just nine months before finding their permanent home here on October 6, 1957. The church’s journey began with the vision of Reverend Rufus Marshall, the first pastor of Solid Rock Mission Church. He led the congregation for a short period. The church’s first deacons, Theodore Floyd, David Anthony, and Henry Redd, provided essential support in those early days. A succession of pastors followed, each leaving their mark on Solid Rock Mission Church. Reverend H.F. Dean served briefly after Reverend Marshall’s retirement in 1958. Then, in 1959, Reverend Sidney Birdsong began his impactful tenure. Under his leadership, Solid Rock Mission Church flourished. Many milestones were achieved during Reverend Birdsong’s time. These include the laying of the cornerstone and the ordination of seventeen deacons. The church also managed to pay off its mortgage, acquire the annex and parking lot, and purchase an organ, piano, and cooling system. The vibrant youth and inspirational choirs were also organized during this period. Reverend Birdsong served Solid Rock Mission Church until his passing in 1976. Reverend J.P. Anderson assumed leadership in 1977. He oversaw significant renovations, including a new roof for the building. He also established the Christian Education Department and the Young Women Auxiliary. Five deacons were ordained under his guidance, and Reverend Hardy Gibson was ordained into the ministry. Reverend Anderson resigned in 1986, paving the way for Reverend Clarence D. Devereaux in 1987. Reverend Devereaux revitalized several auxiliaries, including the Junior Mission, Matrons, Youth and Young Adult Department, and Bible Study Classes. He also established the Mission Department, a vital outreach program that has served countless individuals in need over the years. In 1994, he launched a radio broadcast, further extending the church’s reach. A major renovation project began in 1997, requiring the congregation to worship in the renovated annex while the old sanctuary was demolished. The new sanctuary was completed in 1998. Fifteen deacons were ordained under Reverend Devereaux’s leadership. After 26 years of dedicated service, he retired in 2013. Solid Rock Mission Church stands today as a testament to the enduring power of faith and the dedicated service of its leaders and members.
