“Fifty years a beacon.” That’s quite a milestone for any institution. Right here at 1836 Federal Street stands Solid Rock Baptist Church. It is a testament to faith and community.

Solid Rock Baptist Church celebrated its 50th anniversary. The momentous occasion was marked with joy. The church held two services on that special day. The morning worship service was at 11 a.m. A subsequent service followed at 4 p.m.

Rev. Henry Busby shared his thoughts. He is the pastor of Solid Rock. “It was a spiritual milestone” he said. “For the church to be a viable Christian ministry in South Philadelphia for 50 years.”

During the celebration, the church reflected on its rich history. Elected officials presented citations. These recognized the church’s achievements.

Rev. Henry Busby has deep roots with Solid Rock. He has been a member for some 33 years. He was ordained in the church. Before returning, he pastored Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in New Jersey for five years.

When Pastor John E. Mercer stepped down due to health reasons, Busby was asked to return. He considered it a great honor. After prayer, he accepted the call. He resigned from Bethlehem Missionary Baptist. Then he came back to lead Solid Rock.

Pastor Busby remembers his return with fondness. He also acknowledged the challenges. To everyone at Solid Rock, he was known as young brother Busby. Or Deacon Busby, or Trustee Busby. Never as Pastor Busby.

Despite the change, the congregation welcomed him. Hampton has been a member of Solid Rock for 16 years. She expressed her excitement. She is eager to witness what God will do in the next 50 years.

Hampton also praised Pastor Busby. She called him a visionary. She said that he is about teaching the Word of God.

Thera Martin Milling is a radio broadcaster and journalist. She is a member of Solid Rock. A minister invited her to attend. She felt compelled to join the church.

Milling described the church as family oriented. It prides itself on fellowship. She emphasized the warm atmosphere at Solid Rock. She also recognized Pastor Busby and his wife, Debra. She called them awesome and sweet.

The members of Solid Rock Baptist Church are committed. They want to continue their outreach efforts. They want to serve the community. They look forward to the next 50 years.

Solid Rock Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a family. It is a beacon. And it is a testament to the power of faith.
