Founded in 1971 Solid Rock Baptist Church stands as a testament to unwavering faith. Its journey began not as Solid Rock but as Abyssinia Baptist Church. This followed a name change from Greater New Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Pastor Omie Lee Holliday led the church initially. His dynamic leadership fostered a thriving music ministry and a daycare center.
The church’s history is marked by transitions. Pastor Holliday’s departure in 1970 led to Pastor Aaron McCardell Jr’s brief tenure. Then came Rev JP Anderson. His leadership saw the purchase of land at 6302 Tidwell Road. This location became the church’s new home. The name Solid Rock Baptist Church solidified then.
Rev Leonard E Driver took the helm in 1972. He inherited only 22 members. Yet his powerful preaching and musical gifts built the congregation to over four hundred. His passing in 1985 was a great loss. His legacy however lived on. He left a clear blueprint for selecting his successor. This included a unanimous call from the congregation.
Rev Ross M Cullins Sr answered that call in 1986. His leadership marked a period of growth and spiritual strengthening. The church thrived under his guidance. Solid Rock’s dual emphasis on Evangelism and Discipleship continues to this day. The church continues to overcome challenges. It remains a vital part of the Houston community.
Solid Rock’s name isn’t just a title. It represents the church’s foundation on Christ. The church lives out its motto Anchoring Lives In Jesus Christ.
