Picture this a vast expanse of shimmering solar panels stretching as far as the eye can see. This is the Solarpark Weesow-Willmersdorf EnBW. North of Werneuchen in Brandenburg it stands a testament to Germany’s commitment to renewable energy.
The Solarpark Weesow-Willmersdorf EnBW isn’t just any solar park. It’s the first major PV project in Germany completed without EEG subsidies. This remarkable feat was achieved due to economies of scale and the significant drop in photovoltaic costs over the past decade.
The park’s 465000 solar modules generate around 180 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually. That’s enough clean energy to power approximately 50000 households. It also results in a yearly saving of about 129000 tonnes of CO2.
But the Solarpark Weesow-Willmersdorf EnBW is more than just a power plant. EnBW incorporated extensive environmental measures. These include planting shrubs fruit trees and creating biotopes. Sheep even graze parts of the park helping to maintain the landscape. The goal was to minimize the impact on residents and the surrounding environment. This includes protecting the nearby Weesower Luch nature reserve.
The project began in 2009 with the planning stages. EnBW acquired the land and project rights in 2018. The building permit was granted in 2019 and the construction phase followed in 2020. The solar park was fully commissioned by the end of 2020. Its planned service life extends until 2060.
The electricity generated is fed into the 110 kV grid via two newly constructed transformer stations. Connecting cables stretch for approximately 4 and 7 kilometers. These were carefully planned to minimize disruption to local residents.
The Solarpark Weesow-Willmersdorf EnBW is a shining example of sustainable energy production. It demonstrates that large-scale renewable energy projects can be successful without government subsidies. It also shows a commitment to environmental responsibility.
