Once a grand estate, the Solar das Lameiras whispers tales of Porto’s opulent past. The Solar das Lameiras, a name synonymous with luxury and history, stands as a testament to a bygone era. This magnificent manor, with its blend of 18th and 19th-century architectural styles, once graced the expansive Quinta da Lameira. This estate belonged to the affluent Calém family, renowned for their involvement in the Port wine trade. Imagine the Solar das Lameiras in its prime, a palace-like structure boasting intricate wrought-iron details adorning its windows, balconies, gates, and railings. Touches of azulejo tilework and detailed stonework on the roofline added to its grandeur. The surrounding gardens, a romantic paradise designed in terraces, offered secluded spots, a tranquil lake, a wrought-iron fountain, and even a hidden grotto with its own private lake. In 1978, the Porto City Council acquired a portion of the Quinta da Lameira, including the Solar das Lameiras and its surrounding gardens, for a substantial sum. A few months later, the remaining land, encompassing the lush woodland, was also purchased, forming what is now known as Parque de S. Roque. The park opened to the public in July 1979. The Solar das Lameiras, once the heart of this vast estate, later housed the Urban Planning Office of Porto. Now, it stands silent, awaiting its next chapter. While Parque de S. Roque has fallen into a state of semi-neglect, its potential remains. There’s even a proposal to incorporate the park into a “green circuit,” connecting Porto’s various parks and green spaces via an alternative urban route. The Solar das Lameiras, a silent witness to Porto’s transformation, continues to hold a piece of the city’s history, waiting to be rediscovered.
