Seven souls. That’s how many attended Solana Beach Presbyterian Church’s first service. Can you imagine? A tiny gathering in the Solana Beach Hotel. This wasn’t some grand cathedral. It was a humble beginning. The Solana Beach Presbyterian Church we stand before today is the culmination of decades of faith and community.
The Solana Beach Presbyterian Church story began in January 1944. Four women Geraldine Cox Mary Buzan Francis Nelson and Florence Wilkens had a dream. A dream of a church for their community. They started with a Sunday school in the Justice Court a room within the Solana Beach Hotel. From those humble beginnings Solana Beach Presbyterian Church grew.
In 1946 they formally organized as Solana Beach Community Church. Their first building a repurposed military chapel from Camp Callan. Think of it a building that once served a different purpose now dedicated to worship. It wasn’t located here. This location came later. It demonstrates the church’s adaptability.
By 1957 the congregation outgrew its space. They found five acres “in the sticks” at the corner of Skyline Drive and Stevens Avenue. This is where we stand today. A new chapel and fellowship hall were built and dedicated in 1959. The name changed several times reflecting the evolving identity of the church. In 1960 it became the United Presbyterian Church of Solana Beach. Then in 1970 it settled on the name we know today Solana Beach Presbyterian Church.
Over the years Solana Beach Presbyterian Church continued to expand. Additions to the sanctuary Debin Hall a new children’s building a chapel and expanded outdoor spaces. They purchased additional land. Today this campus reflects not only the church’s growth but its commitment to serving its community. They partner with communities in Hungary Ethiopia El Salvador Mexico and more extending their reach far beyond Solana Beach.
From seven souls in a small room to a thriving congregation on this beautiful campus. The Solana Beach Presbyterian Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and the power of community. A story of transformation and growth. This church isn’t just a building. It’s a living legacy of dedication. It’s a vibrant community continuing to grow and serve. And it all started with seven souls. And a dream.
