A million animals saved. That’s the staggering number that greets you here at the Soi Dog Foundation. This isn’t just a shelter. It’s a testament to unwavering dedication. A beacon of hope for Thailand’s street dogs and cats.

The Soi Dog Foundation began in 2003. A British couple John and Gill Dalley saw the suffering. They were joined by American-born Margot Homburg Park. Together they opened a clinic. Volunteers helped care for homeless dogs. The name Soi Dog? It’s Thai for street dog. It perfectly captures their mission.

Their early work focused on spaying neutering and vaccinating. Year after year tens of thousands of animals received help. By 2023 they’d reached a million. This massive CNVR program is the largest of its kind globally. It’s dramatically reduced stray populations. In Phuket for instance stray animals decreased by about 90% between 2003 and 2020. The impact is visible. Rabies cases in Phuket are extremely rare. Just one confirmed case since 1995 excluding one in 2019.

But Soi Dog’s work extends beyond simple veterinary care. They’ve been instrumental in ending Thailand’s dog meat trade. A horrific industry. Thousands of dogs were rescued. Soi Dog’s efforts even led to Thailand’s first animal welfare act in 2014. International celebrities like Judi Dench and Ricky Gervais championed the cause. The Gill Dalley Sanctuary on Phuket Island houses over 1800 rescued animals. Many are former victims of the meat trade. They’re given a second chance at life. They receive rehabilitation before finding loving homes. Soi Dog manages both local and international adoptions.

The Soi Dog Foundation doesn’t just rescue. They educate. They work with communities. They advocate for better laws. They’re a multifaceted organisation. It’s a holistic approach. They aim to create a society without homeless animals. They strive to end animal cruelty completely. They’ve accomplished so much. Yet they continue to fight tirelessly. Their efforts have made a real and lasting difference. This is more than a foundation. It’s a movement. A powerful reminder of what compassion and dedication can achieve. It’s a story you can see unfold before your eyes right here.
