Let’s step back to the early 1900s. Sofielunds Industriområde began to emerge. The 1930s marked a turning point. A large and well-planned industrial area took shape. Norra Grängesbergsgatan became its central artery. Imagine the scene. Railways crisscrossing the area. Ample space for factories. Excellent connections via Ystadvägen and Nobelvägen.

Industries from central Malmö flocked here. They sought more room to expand. Many established themselves east of Ystadgatan. This area was bordered by Lantmannagatan, Uddeholmsgatan and the Kontinentalbanan railway. A few industries also set up along Bragegatan and Nobelvägen.

Have you noticed the street names? Uddeholm. Västansfors. Grängesberg. Kopparberg. Dannemora. Norberg. They all echo Swedish mill towns or mining communities. The industrial area’s expansion continued until the late 1970s. After that, some industries closed. Others relocated.

Pågen, the bakery giant, arrived in 1960. They moved from Bergsgatan to Lantmannagatan. Pågen expanded taking over several blocks. Meanwhile, other companies departed Sofielunds Industriområde. Metzéns kemtvätteri closed. Malmö Kvarnmaskiner moved to Västra Ingelstad. Wojidkow & Co ceased operations. Saturnus relocated to Fosie. Plåtmanufaktur/PLM now Rexam also moved to Fosie. Malaco now Leaf went to Denmark.

Today, Sofielunds Industriområde continues to evolve. Efforts have been made to enhance safety. Initiatives aim to reduce crime. In 2014, Fastighetsägare Sofielund was formed. It was created by Fastighetsägarna Syd and Malmö Municipality. The association welcomes all property owners in the area. This includes apartment buildings, businesses and housing cooperatives. Its goal is simple. To improve well-being, security and community spirit in Sofielund.

In March 2017, Justice Minister Morgan Johansson visited Sofielund. He met with the association. They discussed the BID model. This shows the ongoing commitment to developing Sofielund.

Sofielunds Industriområde stands as a testament to Malmö’s industrial heritage. It shows its capacity for reinvention. From its early beginnings to its current form, it remains a vital part of the city.
