Beneath an Irish sky, the Socrates 469-399 BC statue stands. It silently observes the vibrant life of Dublin’s Botanic Gardens. The statue of Socrates arrived at the Gardens in 1959. It journeyed from Iveagh House, once a grand residence on St. Stephen’s Green. The Minister for Agriculture’s Annual Report from 1959-1960 proudly noted its arrival, alongside a statue then thought to be Mercy, later identified as Judith. The report mentioned that both statues were “much admired by visitors”. This Socrates 469-399 BC statue bears a striking resemblance to one created by the Italian sculptor Pietro Magni. Magni’s Socrates was showcased in Florence in 1861 and in London the following year. Intriguingly, records show that a Socrates sculpture, also by Magni, was part of Lord Iveagh’s collection displayed at the Dublin Exhibition of Arts, Industries, and Manufactures in 1872. This exhibition was held at Dublin’s Crystal Palace, where the National Concert Hall now stands. Could this be the very same statue that graces the Botanic Gardens today? This connection to Lord Iveagh adds another layer of intrigue to the Socrates 469-399 BC statue’s history. The statue stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with the ancient philosopher, transported across continents and time. Here in Dublin, amidst the lush greenery, Socrates continues to provoke thought and inspire contemplation, just as he did in the bustling streets of ancient Athens.
