Ever wonder how Roman civilization impacted a small Portuguese village? Welcome to Sobretâmega. This village holds secrets dating back to Roman times. The Romans transformed this area into a spa resort. They used the unique mineral waters found here.

Sobretâmega once belonged to the burgo de Canaveses. It was highly regarded by Queen D. Mafalda de Saboia. Legend says she ordered the reconstruction of the Roman bridge. That bridge stood here until the mid-20th century.

King D. Pedro I also had a house in Sobretâmega. It was here that he swore to his mother he would end the war with his father. This promise occurred in the Casa da Palmatória. However he did not keep his word.

Now let’s talk about the Igreja de Santa Maria de Sobretâmega. It shows Romanesque construction in the Gothic era. It was built after 1320. You will notice the absence of columns and capitals on the portals. The interior design reminds us of the Modern Era. The high triumphal arch is proof of this.

A new altarpiece was built after a visitation in 1656. It featured an image of Christ. The parishioners were responsible for this work. In that same century the Chapel of Chagas was renovated. A new image of the patron saint was also commissioned. The work concluded in the early 17th century.

The current main altarpiece is in the national style. It houses a eucharistic throne with a tabernacle. There are also niches for displaying images. You’ll see Nossa Senhora from the 15th century made of Ançã stone. São José stands on either side each holding a Child.

The history of Sobretâmega is linked to the religious sites across the river in São Nicolau. The Churches of Santa Maria de Sobretâmega and São Nicolau are classified together. The Capela and Cruzeiro do Senhor da Boa Passagem are included in this classification. This happened by decree in 1971.

Interestingly the Canaveses bridge was excluded from this classification. It was demolished in 1944 and rebuilt. The new bridge was wider. It was also a few meters downstream from the original. In the 1980s the bridge was submerged due to the construction of the Torrão dam.

So as you stand here consider the layers of history. From Roman spas to royal promises and religious art Sobretâmega offers a glimpse into Portugal’s rich past. A past where each stone tells a story. A story of resilience transformation and enduring faith.
