Have you ever heard of the Bugiada and Mouriscada? This centuries-old tradition takes place in Sobrado, a small village in Portugal. You are standing right in front of the Sobrado church, a beautiful Baroque structure, built in 1671. The church is a testament to the Baldaia family, who were the lords of Sobrado for centuries. They even paid for its construction. They were a powerful family, merchants from Porto, and their legacy lives on within these walls.

Every year on the 24th of June, Sobrado comes alive with the Bugiada and Mouriscada. This traditional festival depicts a battle between Christians and Moors. It reenacts the story of the struggle for the image of Saint John the Baptist. The actors wear colourful costumes and participate in a vibrant and elaborate choreography, representing the conflict between the two forces.

But the fun doesn’t stop there. Did you know the Bugiada and Mouriscada also includes a traditional dance called “Dança do Cego”? It’s a dance performed by a blindfolded character, a symbol of how war can lead to blindness. It’s a reminder of the cost of conflict and the importance of peace.

So stand here in front of this enchanting Sobrado church and imagine the sights and sounds of the Bugiada and Mouriscada. You can almost hear the beat of the drums, the clash of the swords, and the cheers of the crowd. This village has a fascinating history and rich traditions. You can feel it in the air, and experience it in every corner of Sobrado.
