“Hundreds of people are believed to have been killed here,” our guide says, her voice hushed. We stand at Snguon Pich Pagoda. It is a place of beauty, yet scarred by a dark past. Snguon Pich Pagoda served as a security center and execution site during the Khmer Rouge regime.

In 1976, the Khmer Rouge transformed this pagoda into a prison. People from all over the district were brought here. They were accused of being enemies of Angkar. These included evacuees labeled “White Khmer,” CIA, KGB, and former officers. Even “base people” who disobeyed regulations faced imprisonment. Chinese and Cham ethnic minorities also suffered here at Snguon Pich Pagoda.

Imagine the fear that permeated this sacred space. The Snguon Pich Pagoda echoes with the cries of the innocent. Torture and detention were common. The evidence was clear. A pile of victims’ skulls and bones testified to the brutality.

A photo exhibition was held here in 2020. It aimed to raise awareness of the Cambodian genocide. The exhibition shared stories of victims detained and executed at Snguon Pich Pagoda. It also presented the pagoda’s history. It spanned from ancient magic to the horrors of the Khmer Rouge era.

In 2010, a memorial was built within the pagoda compound. It stands to remember the suffering during the regime. It shows respect to those who died. A prayer ceremony was held on May 20, 2020. It commemorated the victims of the Khmer Rouge.

But there’s also a story of hope linked to Snguon Pich Pagoda. A monk bravely placed himself between government and Khmer Rouge forces. He halted fighting and saved lives.

Today, Snguon Pich Pagoda stands as a reminder. It is a reminder of the atrocities committed. It is also a testament to the resilience of the Cambodian people. It urges us to remember the past. We must strive for a future free from such horrors.
