“This bronze wisp almost seems alive!” a voice whispers behind you. You turn to face the Smokedance Sculpture. This six-piece bronze sculpture series by Dale Garman is scattered around the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Installed in 1989, these hefty pieces weigh between 800 and 2,000 pounds each. Ranging in height from 6 to almost 14 feet, they create a dynamic presence around the pavilion. The sculpture you’re looking at, the centerpiece of the series and the namesake of the Smokedance Garden, was specially commissioned years earlier by Cynthia Woods Mitchell herself. The garden, a tribute to Mitchell’s love of nature and art, was officially dedicated before a Houston Symphony concert with a poignant butterfly release in her honor.
