Beneath the flag of Malaysia, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Taman Melawati stands tall. SMK Taman Melawati is a beacon of education in Taman Melawati. It is located in Gombak Selangor. This school is about 20 km from Kuala Lumpur’s city center.
SMK Taman Melawati opened its doors on August 1 1991. The school’s motto is “Be Driven Endeavour Succeed”. This motto reflects the school’s commitment to academic excellence and personal growth.
Initially SMK Taman Melawati started with two blocks. These were Block C and Block D. There was also a canteen. At the beginning there were 403 students. By 2009 the student population had grown. There were 1345 male students and 1291 female students. The total number of students was 2636. The school had 138 teachers.
Over the years SMK Taman Melawati expanded. In 1994 Block B opened. This accommodated the increasing number of students. A surau was built in 1998 for prayers. In 2001 the school hall was completed. This cost RM1.8 million. Two new blocks Block A and Block E were added in 2003. In 2010 Block Frangipani opened. It housed a second art studio and a Sixth Form classroom.
SMK Taman Melawati provides various facilities. These include a school hall and a library. The library has a computer room. There are also two additional computer rooms and a surau. Sports facilities include basketball volleyball and badminton courts. A field is available for outdoor activities. The school has six general science laboratories. There are two labs each for Chemistry Physics and Biology. Two art studios provide space for creative pursuits.
The SMK Taman Melawati logo has symbolic elements. Red represents the spirit of love for the nation. A pencil symbolizes success. Two hands signify unity. The year 1991 marks the school’s opening. The Olympic logo embodies the spirit of sportsmanship. A book highlights the importance of academics. Yellow is the color of Selangor’s flag. Stairs represent progress towards success.
SMK Taman Melawati offers a wide range of co-curricular activities. Students participate in clubs sports and uniformed societies. Clubs include academic and non-academic options. Sports range from football to chess. Uniformed societies include Scouts and Police Cadets.
Academically SMK Taman Melawati consistently performs well. It often ranks among the top schools in the Gombak district. In 2018 fifteen students achieved all A’s. One student scored 10 A+. The school aims to increase the number of excellent students.
The school magazine Persada has been published annually since 1995. This magazine showcases student achievements and school events.
Today SMK Taman Melawati continues to thrive. En Jagdave Singh A/L Avtar Singh is the principal. The school remains dedicated to providing quality education.
