Buzzing with life, Smiling Hogshead Ranch is more than just a garden. It is a testament to community, resilience, and the power of reclaiming urban spaces.

Smiling Hogshead Ranch began as an act of guerilla gardening in 2011. Gil Lopez and his friends sought a place to cultivate their green thumbs. They discovered an unused section of railroad tracks. It was part of the Degnon Terminal, a relic of Long Island City’s industrial past.

This land belonged to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Instead of fences or signs, they found an open space. Lopez and his crew tested the soil to ensure it was safe for planting. Soon, Smiling Hogshead Ranch was born.

The early days were clandestine. The group farmed at night to avoid detection. However, their presence inadvertently deterred unwanted activity. The MTA sanctioned their work and eventually granted them a lease.

The lease came with conditions. Smiling Hogshead Ranch couldn’t erect permanent structures. They assumed liability for anything that happened on the land. The agreement was subject to annual renewal.

Today, Smiling Hogshead Ranch thrives. Volunteers grow crops and maintain a robust composting system. They manage an apiary and provide shelter for feral cats. An amphitheater hosts cultural events. Schoolchildren visit to learn about urban farming.

Unlike many community gardens, Smiling Hogshead Ranch is unfenced. This reflects its commitment to being a public commons. It’s a space where community members can freely gather and cultivate together.

The lack of a fence presents challenges. Crop theft and vandalism occur. Volunteers address these issues without resorting to law enforcement.

Smiling Hogshead Ranch is a collaborative effort. Members collectively decide what to plant. They share the harvest. This stands in contrast to community gardens where individuals have separate plots.

The Ranch embodies a spirit of reclaiming and revitalizing urban spaces. Smiling Hogshead Ranch is an exemplar of co-existence. It is a space for ecological purposes.

Smiling Hogshead Ranch continues to evolve. The Dutch Kills Loop proposal seeks to integrate the Ranch into a larger network. This would provide resources for expanding its outreach programs.

Smiling Hogshead Ranch reminds us that with motivation and collaboration, we can transform neglected spaces into vibrant hubs of community and growth. If you want it, take it.
