Slipping between Hornsgatan and Drottninggatan, we find ourselves at Slussen. Slussen isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a neighborhood whispering tales of Malmö’s past. Imagine Malmö in the late 1700s. Simple houses lined the eastern entryway, welcoming travelers into the city’s heart. This is the genesis of Slussen, part of the historic Östra Förstaden. The 1800s saw Slussen grow, its buildings rising as a backdrop to the bustling life unfolding within its streets. A canal once flowed here, parallel to the newly constructed railway in the 1850s. This canal, now gone, connected to the harbor, giving Slussen its name, meaning “the sluice.” A bustling bus station once occupied the triangular square south of the canal. Now, a 12-story apartment building stands in its place, alongside a small park, marking the passage of time and the ever-changing face of Slussen. Today, Slussen blends old and new. Early 1900s apartment buildings stand alongside modern structures. Shops and restaurants line Östra Förstadsgatan. The new police headquarters and Malmö Rättscentrum hold court near Drottninggatan. Slussen is more than just buildings. It’s a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of history. It’s a place where the past whispers to the present, inviting us to explore its hidden corners and discover the heart of Malmö.
