Can you imagine Malmö without its iconic windmill? That is Slottsmöllan. This isn’t just any windmill. It’s a symbol of Malmö’s history and its connection to the surrounding Skåne landscape.

Slottsmöllan stands proudly near Malmö Castle and the beautiful Castle Garden. It is a Dutch-style mill with a rich history. It replaced an older mill from the 17th century that tragically burned down. The current mill was built in 1851 on the former site of the Bastion Stenbock.

For many years Slottsmöllan harnessed the power of the wind. It operated using wind power until 1879. Then it briefly switched to steam power until 1895. It later returned to wind power until the 1930s. Regular milling finally ceased in 1945. Today Malmö museums manage the site.

Slottsmöllan is more than just a historical structure. It offers a glimpse into the life of a miller’s family in the 19th century. The complex includes a fully furnished miller’s house and garden.

The mill is a Skåne-style Dutch windmill. It has a high mill house, a strong surrounding structure, recognizable wings and a dome-shaped cap. The original design drawing of Slottsmöllan still exists. The drawing corresponds largely to how the mill looks today.

Inside Slottsmöllan, the machinery remains intact and functional. The original millstones of natural stone have been replaced with cast artificial stone. A wrought iron weather vane in the shape of a dragon’s head sits on top of the cap. This shows the wind direction.

Operating a windmill was hard work. Millers had to pay constant attention to weather and wind conditions. During peak season the miller, his journeyman, and his apprentice worked day and night. Sometimes extra staff were needed.

Lars Thorell was the last miller at Slottsmöllan. He began working at the mill in 1892. He remained connected to the business for over fifty years. From 1907 to 1945 he was the leaseholder. The city of Malmö has owned the mill since 1895.

Slottsmöllan stands as a reminder of Skåne’s windmills’ golden age during the 1800s. The well-preserved mill environment includes both the mill building and the miller’s house. This gives a complete picture of its historical importance.

Today Slottsmöllan and the surrounding Mölleplatsen host outdoor events and concerts. These are especially common during the summer. It is a cultural hub in Malmö. So take a moment to appreciate this iconic landmark. Imagine the miller hard at work harnessing the wind.
