In the heart of Manhattan, a beacon of faith and community stands tall. The Slavonian Catholic Church of the Assumption has witnessed the changing tides of New York City since its inception in 1858. Originally established by Father Raffeiner for German Catholics, the Slavonian Catholic Church of the Assumption quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Archbishop John Hughes himself laid the cornerstone for the current building on West 49th Street in May 1859. The church was dedicated just a few months later in December of the same year. The Slavonian Catholic Church of the Assumption wasn’t just a place of worship. It served as a hub for education and social gatherings. The basement initially housed the school and parish hall. A separate school building was constructed in 1873 under Pastor Strähle. This school, staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, thrived and by 1914, educated around 450 pupils. The community continued to flourish under Reverend John P. Neumann, who became pastor in October 1910. He spearheaded the creation of the Assumption Lyceum, a social club for the young men of the parish. The Slavonian Catholic Church of the Assumption has stood as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community.
