Ever wondered what happens to a slaughterhouse when its days of butchery are done? Here at Slagthuset in Malmö, you’ll find a vibrant answer. Slagthuset, meaning “slaughterhouse” in Swedish, isn’t shy about its past. This building, with its imposing brick walls and large stone arches, once served as Malmö’s municipal slaughterhouse from 1904 to 1969. Designed by city architect Salomon Sörensen, the original structure has been cleverly incorporated into a modern complex. The thirteen-story office building, also called “Malmö Slagthus,” was added in 1993, designed by Ahlsén & Lindström architects. It now dominates the Malmö skyline, standing tall at 63 meters. But Slagthuset is more than just offices. It’s a buzzing hub of activity, hosting everything from conferences and exhibitions to concerts and nightclubs. In its early days as an entertainment complex, Slagthuset gained a reputation as one of Scandinavia’s largest nightclubs, boasting a vast 8,500 square meters of space. World-renowned DJs like David Guetta, Avicii, and even Tiesto in 2004, graced its stages. Remember the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, hosted right here in Malmö? Slagthuset played a key role, hosting the Euroclub and even featuring performances of the winning hit “Euphoria.” Today, Slagthuset continues to evolve. After a brief closure in March 2021, new management took the reins, ensuring this historic venue remains a vital part of Malmö’s cultural scene. So, as you stand before Slagthuset, appreciate the echoes of its past mingling with the vibrant energy of its present. From slaughterhouse to cultural powerhouse, Slagthuset is a testament to Malmö’s ability to transform and reinvent.
