Did you know that the Skyway Bridge is the longest bridge in Colorado? Crews broke ground on this part of the metro-wide FasTracks project. It resulted in the longest bridge in Colorado.

The Skyway Bridge spans 9,533 feet. At its highest point, it stands nearly 50 feet above the ground. In comparison, the Royal Gorge bridge spans only 1,270 feet. The Skyway Bridge is a vital part of the North Metro Rail Line. This 18.5-mile commuter rail line runs from Denver Union Station through Commerce City, Northglenn, and Thornton.

The Skyway Bridge is one of 13 bridges on the North Rail Line. RTD spokeswoman Brenda Tierney said designing the Skyway Bridge took nearly a year and a half. It required coordination from eight government and regional groups. At least six engineers worked on the project. Two were full-time for the duration of the design. Three engineers worked part-time. One full-time senior engineer managed the design oversight.

RTD planners say building a bridge is generally more expensive than traveling on land. However, in this case, the Skyway Bridge avoids hundreds of environmental and construction impacts. It also preserves private property. The Skyway Bridge crosses 11 existing transportation corridors and waterways.

The Skyway Bridge begins its rise just south of York Street in Commerce City. It spans above and across York Street. It also crosses Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific tracks and spurs four times. When complete, the Skyway Bridge carries electric commuter rail trains. These trains travel through Denver and Commerce City. They cross 11 existing transportation corridors and waterways. The bridge touches down adjacent to Bambei-Walker Reservoir. This is just south of 68th Avenue.

Ashland Vaughn is the project manager for the North Metro Rail Line. He said that it’s an accomplishment for their project to say they worked with many professionals and stakeholders to design the longest bridge in Colorado. He added that it’s in RTD’s transit system, which makes it all that more exciting for them. Vaughn also noted that the cost and time savings of avoiding the multitude of impacts makes the choice to build the bridge a smart business decision. The Skyway Bridge is more than just a structure. It represents smart planning and regional cooperation. Next time you cross the Skyway Bridge, remember the collaboration and innovation that made it possible.
