In 1079 a clash of armies echoed through these very woods. Godred Crovan a fierce Norse-Gael warrior landed his forces at Ramsey. He sought to conquer the Isle of Man. His opponent was King Fingal Godredson. Crovan cleverly hid his men amongst the trees of Skyhill. He ambushed the Manx forces. Overwhelmed and with nowhere to escape they surrendered.
The Chronicles of Mann describe the scene vividly. Three hundred Norsemen emerged from their hiding place. They attacked the Manx from the rear. The Manx army was routed. They had no escape. The sea had filled the riverbed at Ramsey. Godred Crovan showed mercy. He spared the lives of the defeated Manx.
