Founded on July 31 2003 Sky Italia emerged from the merger of TELE+ and Stream TV. The company quickly rose to prominence. It became a key player in Italy’s satellite television landscape. Sky Italia is owned by the American media giant Comcast. It broadcasts across Italy San Marino and Vatican City.

Sky Italia broadcasts national free-to-air television channels. TV8 Cielo and Sky TG24 keep viewers informed and entertained. Pay TV services are broadcast on Hot Bird satellites. These broadcasts are encrypted with NDS VideoGuard.

In its early years Sky Italia saw rapid growth. By November 2004 Sky’s subscribers reached three million. By December 2006 that number climbed to four million. Sky Italia embraced technological advancements early on. It launched its first high-definition channels in May 2006. Sky Sport HD and Sky Cinema HD were among the first.

Sky Italia continued to innovate with the launch of 3D channels. Sky Sport 3D arrived in October 2010. Sky Cinema 3D launched in December 2010. These channels later merged into Sky 3D. Sky 3D eventually closed in January 2018.

Throughout its history Sky Italia has undergone several changes. In June 2010 the company adopted a new logo. It mirrored the branding of BSkyB. There were also changes in leadership. Tom Mockridge replaced Rebekah Brooks as chief executive of News International in July 2011. Andrea Zappia then succeeded Mockridge as CEO on August 1 2011.

Sky Italia reached a milestone in October 2011. It surpassed five million subscribers. This achievement underscored its growing influence in the Italian media market. The company also expanded its services. Sky Italia launched Sky Wifi in June 2020. It is an ultra-broadband service.

Sky Italia created Vision Distribution in 2016. It is a film distribution venture with several Italian production companies. These include Wildside Cattleya and Palomar. Universal Pictures handles theatrical distribution for Vision’s releases in Italy since August 2019.

Sky Italia has a wide array of channel packs. Sky TV offers entertainment news and documentaries. Sky Cinema provides a range of film channels. Sky Sport and Sky Calcio cater to sports and football fans. Sky Kids offers programming for children.

Sky Italia is committed to environmental responsibility. The Sky Zero campaign aims for net zero carbon emissions by 2030. This initiative reflects the company’s dedication to sustainability.
