Deep in the woods near WaldHaus Freiburg, a surprise awaits. It’s the Skulpturenpfad WaldMenschen, a path less ordinary. This unique sculpture trail winds through the trees, showcasing the whimsical works of Thomas Rees. He transforms ancient trees into captivating figures. The Skulpturenpfad WaldMenschen begins in the open area behind the WaldHaus. From there, it meanders into the forest. The sculptures blend seamlessly with their surroundings. Some are easy to spot, while others play hide-and-seek among the foliage. The path eventually leads to the Wonnhaldenrundweg. Among the notable sculptures are “Der Wurzelkopf” (The Root Head), “Hexenschuh” (Witch’s Shoe), and “Baumwelt” (Tree World). These sculptures stand in the clearing, greeting visitors as they embark on their journey. “Der Wurzelkopf,” an upturned rootstock, sports a striking face and a crown of vibrant new growth. It showcases the artist’s intention for nature to reclaim his creations over time. “Hexenschuh,” carved from a 120-year-old linden tree, depicts a grinning witch playfully aiming her bow at a man below. “Baumwelt” is a remarkable piece created from a 230-year-old oak. This oak, once a protected natural monument in Zähringen, met its end in 2006. Rees salvaged the lower section, transforming it into a walk-in sculpture. He suspended an oak sphere between the three sections of the trunk, symbolizing Earth. A mirror inside allows visitors to become a part of this enchanting tree world. Another captivating sculpture is “Drachennest” (Dragon’s Nest). This piece features a seven-meter-long dragon guarding its nest and egg. Crafted from a 200-year-old oak that fell near the Wonnhalde tram stop, it embodies the mystical allure of the forest. The Skulpturenpfad WaldMenschen offers a unique blend of art and nature.
