Step into the Skulpturenhalle der Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst Roland Phleps. Feel the cool smoothness of the polished stainless steel. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to a life dedicated to art and precision.
This impressive hall houses the legacy of Dr Roland Phleps a man who seamlessly blended his careers as a neurologist and psychiatrist with his passion for sculpting. Dr Phleps founded this very Stiftung in 1997 his vision to keep the principles of Concrete Art alive. He built this stunning hall in 1998. Architect Detlef Sacker with Jens Pasche designed this building with its brilliantly clear proportions.
Notice the light flooding the space. It’s designed to showcase the sculptures perfectly. Dr Phleps’ work is characterized by simple geometric forms circles ellipses triangles. He doesn’t just arrange them. He bends and folds the brushed stainless steel. This transforms heavy materials into seemingly weightless pieces. His sculptures seem to dance. His work reflects his unique approach. He meticulously plans each piece. His sculptures are not random. Each one is a carefully considered form.
His style is undeniably concrete art. It’s not about emotional interpretations. It’s about the purity of form and the interplay of light and shadow. This is in direct contrast to art that seeks beauty through imitation. For Dr Phleps this was a playful experiment with geometric elements. He found beauty in precision and harmony. The hall also serves as a concert hall its superb acoustics attracting musicians worldwide.
Many internationally acclaimed artists have exhibited here. Names like Heinz Mack Marcello Morandini and Jánosh Fajó have graced these walls. János Fajó a highly regarded Hungarian artist even described one of Dr Phleps’ exhibitions as unlike anything he’d ever seen.
This Skulpturenhalle isn’t confined to its walls. Dr Phleps’ sculptures extend into the city. You’ll find them in Freiburg’s Stadtgarten in the university’s grounds and even in parks. His work even reaches far beyond Freiburg to places like Dresden Ulm and Nürtingen. He even created a piece in his birthplace Hermannstadt.
The Skulpturenhalle is a testament to Dr Phleps’ life. It’s a space where art science and a deep appreciation for beauty converge. It’s a place where the spirit of Concrete Art thrives. It’s more than a museum. It’s a celebration. It’s a vibrant legacy. It’s the soul of art in pure form.
