Ever wonder how a church on Skidaway Island grows from a small gathering to a large community? The story of Skidaway Island Methodist Church is one of faith, growth, and dedication. It began with a vision and a small group of people.
In July 1979, the seed was planted. Approximately eight acres of land were purchased for the potential church. Then, on September 11, 1983, a pivotal moment arrived. Thirty-five people attended the first service. It was held in Unit 44 at The Settlement.
The church was officially chartered on February 26, 1984. This marked a significant step for the new congregation. On November 11, 1984, the church found a temporary home. The Board of Missions furnished a trailer. Thirty-eight people attended the first service there. Dr. Ralph Bailey served as the founding pastor for five years.
Groundbreaking for a new chapel occurred on November 15, 1987. In June 1988, Rev. Jim Giddens was appointed as pastor. On July 17, 1988, the congregation celebrated. One hundred twenty-eight people attended the first service in the new chapel.
The church continued to expand. On February 28, 1992, groundbreaking took place for Bailey Hall. This would house the church office and Sunday school rooms. At that time, membership had reached 274. The Memorial Garden was consecrated on September 19, 1993. It provided a place for reflection and remembrance.
As the church grew, so did its needs. On January 10, 1999, another groundbreaking was held. This time it was for the sanctuary and additions to the education building. These additions included classrooms, office space, a choir room, and a storage area. They were completed in November 1999.
The dedication of the sanctuary was held on April 9, 2000. This was a joyous occasion for the congregation. By March 2017, the church had grown significantly. The membership stood at 1424.
Today, Skidaway Island Methodist Church continues to serve its community. It offers various ministries and programs. One notable addition is the Fine Arts Academy. Led by SIMC’s Choir Director, Carrie Kitchen, the academy offers music instruction. This includes small group classes and private lessons in voice and piano. The academy plans to expand to include art instruction and a broader array of instruments.
The mission of the Skidaway Fine Arts Academy is clear. It commits to providing transformative educational experiences. These nurture creativity, develop technical proficiency, and instill a lifelong passion for musical and artistic expression.
From its humble beginnings in a trailer to its current vibrant state, Skidaway Island Methodist Church has touched many lives. It stands as a testament to the power of community. It exemplifies faith and the arts on Skidaway Island.
