Beneath the shimmering surface of the Skidaway River lies a history richer than the oyster beds. Skidaway Island a barrier island south of Savannah has witnessed centuries of change. From ancient Timucua settlements to modern gated communities its story unfolds like a tide.

For millennia Skidaway Island was a sacred ground for the Timucua. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence of their presence over 4000 years ago. Three remarkable ceremonial shell rings stand as testament to their advanced culture. These New World pyramids are incredibly rare fewer than twenty exist globally. Imagine the rituals performed within those ancient circles.

The island’s name Skidaway itself is shrouded in mystery. Some believe it’s an Anglicized version of Scenawki the wife of Yamacraw chief Tomochichi. Others suggest it’s rooted in the Yamacraw language. The truth remains lost in the mists of time.

James Oglethorpe attempted to establish a settlement on Skidaway in the 1730s. He sent five families and six single men to build a fort. Farming proved unsuccessful though. The infertile soil forced the pioneers to abandon their efforts. Later attempts at settlement saw a degree of success. John Milledge established Modena Plantation. His son John Jr rose to prominence as a governor and senator. He even helped found the University of Georgia.

The island played a role in the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. A small skirmish took place during the Revolution. Earthen batteries were built during the Civil War to defend against Union attacks. The 4th Georgia Battery was stationed here. The Union blockade ultimately led to the island’s abandonment.

Skidaway faced further hardship. After the Civil War black freedmen tried to establish a life on the island. They received assistance from the Freedman’s Bureau and Benedictine monks. A tidal wave devastated the freshwater supply. Farming again proved impossible. Prohibition saw Skidaway become a haven for bootleggers its isolation providing ideal cover.

The 20th century brought industrial development. Union Camp Corporation gained control. They initially focused on pulpwood production. Eventually they shifted to residential development. The company donated land which became Skidaway Island State Park. A bridge built in 1971 finally connected the island to Savannah. The Landings a large gated community grew. This transformed the landscape forever.

Today Skidaway Island offers a blend of natural beauty and modern amenities. Skidaway Island State Park boasts nature trails a visitor center and abundant wildlife. The Skidaway Institute of Oceanography conducts vital research. The island continues to evolve a testament to its enduring spirit. The legacy of the Timucua the struggles of early settlers and the boom of modern development all contribute to its rich history. Skidaway Island’s story is far from over its next chapter is still being written.
