Seven unused platforms stand silent. Acharnes Railway Center SKA. A colossal testament to ambitious plans. A modern marvel built during Greece’s debt crisis.
SKA is more than just a train station. It’s a crossroads. A convergence of vital railway lines connecting Athens to Thessaloniki and Athens Airport to Patras. It opened in April 2011. Its initial name was Menidi Railway Center. The change reflects its crucial role. Its location in Acharnes makes it a key transportation hub.
Imagine the hustle and bustle of its opening day. The hope for economic growth. The reality was different. The Greek debt crisis hit hard. OSE the operator reduced services. Ticket offices closed. Reliability suffered. Passenger numbers dwindled. SKA was a symbol of unrealized potential. A white elephant some called it. Too big for the demand.
Then privatization arrived. In 2017 OSE’s passenger transport became TrainOSE. Later rebranded Hellenic Train. It’s now a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane. The station infrastructure however remained with Gaiose. The lines stayed with OSE.
The two platforms serve the Athens-Thessaloniki line and the Suburban Railway. Six more sit ready. Waiting for the Athens-Patras line to be fully completed. Or for the Acharnes Bypass to be built. A bypass that could redirect intercity trains. This would reduce travel times significantly. However funding and other proposals have put the project on hold.
The main station building stands next to the southbound platforms. Access is via stairs or lifts. There are sheltered seats and departure screens. A large car park is adjacent to the southbound line. Buses also serve SKA. KTEL Attikis runs lines 740 and 755 connecting it to other parts of Athens.
SKA’s story is one of hope and frustration. A symbol of a nation’s aspirations. A reminder that even the most ambitious plans can be hindered. It stands as a monument to both the potential of progress and the challenges of economic hardship. Yet it endures. A silent sentinel. A vital connection in the heart of Athens.
