Curiosity sparked in 1927. That’s when Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Pelong began its journey. On April 9th, a small group of 32 local children gathered, eager to learn in their own village. SK Sungai Pelong started humbly, teaching students from grades one through three. The school’s first teacher held a special place in the hearts of the villagers. Their trust grew as more children enrolled at SK Sungai Pelong. By 1931, three headmasters had already guided the school. The growing number of students prompted the government to build a new structure. In 1934, a three-classroom building with a thatched roof became the new home of SK Sungai Pelong. This marked a period of growth, interrupted only by the outbreak of World War II in 1942. Formal education resumed after the British returned. Around 150 students attended SK Sungai Pelong at that time. In 1952, a new building, partly wood and partly stone, was constructed to accommodate the expanding student body, which had reached 228. This growth continued, with 304 students enrolled by 1956. SK Sungai Pelong saw a succession of headmasters. Development remained somewhat static until 1970, when the school had 400 students. The education department assigned a clerical assistant to help the headmaster with administrative tasks. That same year, SK Sungai Pelong was upgraded to Grade B status. To accommodate the now 550 students, a two-story building with six classrooms and an office was approved in 1976. The Chief Director of Education, Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Murad B Mohd Noor, officially opened the new building. By 1982, SK Sungai Pelong operated in two sessions, morning and afternoon. It was further upgraded to Grade A in 1986, receiving new bicycle racks, a reading garden, and recreational facilities. By 1995, the school’s population had swelled to 1500 students. Today, SK Sungai Pelong remains a testament to its humble beginnings, standing as a cornerstone of education in Sungai Pelong.
