Envision a school named after a Hindu deity. Right here stands SK Sri Dhandayuthapani. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. SK Sri Dhandayuthapani holds a fascinating story within its walls. The school sits on land owned by the Chettiar Association. They established it in 1963 with their foundation and government funding. The Chettiars initially envisioned SK Sri Dhandayuthapani as a Tamil school. However, the government disagreed. So, it opened as Ipoh Road English School, inaugurated by the then Minister of Education, Kapten Hamid Khan Bin Sakhawat Ali Khan. The name soon changed to Chettiar School. This also didn’t stick. The government believed that schools shouldn’t be named after ethnic groups. It then became Sri Thandayuthapani English School. This name honored a Hindu deity. Eventually, it adopted its current official name: Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Dhandayuthapani, or SKSD for short. Initially, SK Sri Dhandayuthapani had only ten classrooms, operating double sessions. It had a canteen, office, and staff room. Mr. A. Kumarasami served as the first headmaster. A second building was constructed in 1963. By 1970, there were 21 classrooms and a library, eliminating the need for afternoon sessions. The classrooms once bore unique names. There was T for Sri Thandayuthapani, K for headmaster Kumarasamy, N for Chettiar Association member Nagappa Chettiar, and H for the first Parent-Teacher Association president, Tuan Haji Harun Sultan. By 2010, classrooms were renamed after gemstones, “Berlian,” meaning diamond. In 1984, further expansion brought a games hall, a new office, a resource center, and a staff room. This was a joint effort by the Ministry of Education and the Chettiar Association. As of 2011, SK Sri Dhandayuthapani was under the administration of Puan Ramnah Binti Darus. It had 16 teachers and ten staff members. The school boasted six classrooms, an office, a resource center, a prayer room, a games hall, a remedial classroom (Bilik Permata), a counseling room, a j-Qaf room, a music room, science labs, and a living skills workshop. SK Sri Dhandayuthapani may have seen changes over the years. But its spirit of education remains strong.
