Nestled beside the Masjid Setapak in Kuala Lumpur, SK Setapak has witnessed the city’s transformation since 1893. Originally, SK Setapak, then known simply as a Malay School, began with just 40 boys and three teachers. Imagine the small classes in those early days. Can you picture the eager faces of those first students? In 1899, the school opened its doors to girls, marking a significant step in local education. The school moved to its current location in 1909, becoming Sekolah Melayu Setapak. The name SK Setapak, as we know it today, was officially adopted in 1962. This coincided with the construction of a new two-story building, a testament to the growing student population. As the community thrived, so did SK Setapak. In 1983, six new classrooms were added. A few years later, in 1986, a surau, or prayer room, was built near the school canteen, further enriching the school environment. This surau, named Madrasah Al-Hazwan, was funded by the local representative, Encik Idris bin Basri. It was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Education, Tuan Haji Bujang bin Ulis, that same year. Growth continued into the 1990s. A single-story building was added in 1990. Just four years later, a four-story building with 15 classrooms and a large hall was constructed. SK Setapak boasts a rich history, woven into the fabric of Kuala Lumpur. From its humble beginnings with 40 boys to a thriving community school, SK Setapak continues to educate and inspire. In 2023, SK Setapak had 489 mainstream students and a dedicated staff of 48 teachers. The school is a testament to the enduring power of education, shaping young minds and contributing to the vibrant community of Setapak.
