“Parliament Field” is what the Vikings called it. Right here at the Site of Tynwald Plaque, we’re standing on a place of immense historical significance. This plaque marks Tynwald Hill, the ancient meeting place of the Manx parliament. It’s more than just a spot. It’s a symbol of Manx heritage and a living testament to the island’s unique culture.

Tynwald Hill dates back at least to the late first millennium AD. That’s over 1000 years of continuous parliament. This makes it the oldest continuous parliament in the world. The name Tynwald comes from the Norse word “thingvollr”. This means assembly field. The Vikings definitely left their mark here.

Look closely at Tynwald Hill. It is an artificial mound with a stepped profile. It rises about 3.6 meters high. The base is about 25 meters in diameter. The hill’s origins are prehistoric. Royal development nearby made it more important. By the early 2nd millennium AD, it was a national meeting place.

Did you know the terraced hill is said to be formed of soil from each of the ancient parishes? This connects the hill to all parts of the Isle of Man. This ancient tradition binds the community together.

Tynwald Day happens every year on July 5th. Thousands attend this national holiday. A representative of the British monarchy presides. Parliament members and honored guests gather. New laws from the past year are announced. The laws are proclaimed in both Manx Gaelic and English. This tradition has continued for over 1000 years.

The open-air ceremony includes a procession. There is a Guard of Honour, Military Band, and Standard Bearers. Representatives from local schools also participate. The Lieutenant Governor arrives. An RAF flypast marks the arrival. They inspect the military. The Lieutenant Governor lays a wreath at the War Memorial. After a minute of silence, they join Members of Tynwald for a church service in the Royal Chapel.

After the service, everyone walks to Tynwald Hill. The Lieutenant Governor and other officials sit on tiered seating. The Lieutenant Governor instructs the First Deemster to call the assembly to order. The laws are then proclaimed. First, in English by the First Deemster. Then, in Manx by the Second Deemster. The Lieutenant Governor invites anyone with a Petition for Redress to present it. This allows grievances to be addressed and can lead to new laws.

Following the ceremony, Tynwald meets in the Chapel. They sign the certificates of proclamation for the Acts. They deal with other business. This blend of ancient tradition and modern governance makes Tynwald unique.

The Site of Tynwald Plaque is more than just a marker. It represents the enduring spirit of the Manx people. It highlights their commitment to tradition. The plaque reminds us of the importance of this place. It’s a place where the past meets the present. It is a site where the future of the Isle of Man is shaped.
