Have you ever heard of Dr. Ferdinand Ludwig Herff? He was a pioneer physician who dedicated his life to serving the people of San Antonio. Right here, standing in front of this simple historical marker, you’re looking at the very spot where his home once stood.

Dr. Herff was born in Germany in 1820. He came from an aristocratic family and studied medicine at some of the finest universities in Europe. But he wasn’t content with just practicing medicine in his home country. He had a dream to start a new life in Texas.

In 1847, Dr. Herff joined a group of idealistic Germans who were hoping to establish a socialist community in Texas. They called it “Die Vierziger” – the Forty. They settled on the Llano River near what is now Castell. But the experiment failed, and Dr. Herff went back to Germany. He married Mathilde Kungel Hoeffer and returned to Texas in 1850 to begin his life anew. He settled in San Antonio and quickly became one of the most respected doctors in the city.

He was known not only for his skill as a surgeon, but also for his kindness and his willingness to help anyone in need, regardless of their ability to pay. There was no lack of patients. However, many were poor, and Dr. Herff believed that professional satisfaction was its own reward. He was one of the founders of San Antonio’s first hospital, which was a monumental achievement, a testament to his dedication.

He was a man of many firsts: He was the first to perform a successful cataract removal in San Antonio. He was also the first to use chloroform for anesthesia during surgery. He was so dedicated to his patients that he performed surgeries in their homes, hotels, and even in open-air locations.

Dr. Herff’s work as a physician touched the lives of countless people in San Antonio. He was a true pioneer who helped shape the medical landscape of Texas in the 19th century. Today, this plaque stands as a permanent memorial to his legacy.
