A weathered aluminum plaque stands silent sentinel. It whispers tales of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Cemetery. Here, just off FM-362, two miles south of Waller, lies a story etched in time. St. Mary’s wasn’t always a memory. Czech immigrants, seeking solace and community after the Civil War, built their first sanctuary here in 1879. Imagine a small wooden structure, a beacon of faith in a vast landscape. The cemetery, still present, began alongside it. Those early families, the McCarthys, Urbans, Youngs, Pyes, Smiths, and Felkers, filled its rows with their loved ones. They relied on missionary priests who braved the elements, especially harsh winters, to bring them the sacraments. Tragedy struck in 1890. A tornado ripped through, leaving the little church in ruins. But the community’s spirit remained unbroken. In 1892, inspired by Father Joseph Klein, they rallied. They raised funds, brick by brick, to build anew. This time, larger and stronger. A Sunday school followed in 1893, led by dedicated women: Maggie Connelly, Alice Urban, Edith Young, Maggie Nahm, and Leola Urban. The church thrived, becoming a hub for both English and Polish services under Father Max Budnick in the 1920s. The influx of Polish families added another layer to this rich tapestry of faith and heritage. Now, only the cemetery remains, a poignant reminder of St. Mary’s. The tombstones, many inscribed in Czech, stand as testaments to those who came before. The echoes of hymns and prayers, though faded, linger in the air. The spirit of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, though its physical presence is gone, endures.
