Maceda-Praia da Vieira is incredibly important. It’s a Site of Community Importance in Porto Portugal. It’s 100% marine covering a massive 5026 square kilometers. That’s 502637 hectares of protected ocean. Think about that for a moment. This is a significant area dedicated to conservation.
This incredible site protects six species under the Nature Directives. Three are fish two are mammals. One is a reptile. The Maceda-Praia da Vieira also protects two habitat types under the Habitats Directive. These are sandbanks and reefs. The sandbanks are slightly covered by seawater all the time. The reefs are essential to marine life.
The Site of Community Importance Maceda-Praia da Vieira is designated under the Birds Directive 2009/147/EC and the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC. The exact date of the Standard Data Form update isn’t available. However its protection is secured under Resolution of the Council of Ministers number 17/2019 of January 23rd.
