The acrid stench of rotten eggs still hangs in the air. It’s a ghost of the Aliso Canyon gas leak a lingering reminder of the worst single natural gas leak in US history. Right here before you stands the site of that catastrophic event.

This isn’t just any gas leak. The Aliso Canyon gas leak was a colossal environmental disaster. It began on October 23 2015 at the Aliso Canyon underground storage facility. This facility the second largest of its kind in the United States is owned by Southern California Gas Company.

For 118 days methane and other noxious chemicals poured into the atmosphere. An estimated 97100 tonnes of methane and 7300 tonnes of ethane were released. The impact was staggering. The leak temporarily increased the Earth’s atmospheric methane by about 0.002%. The environmental consequences were widespread and long-lasting.

The cause was a failure in the 7-inch casing of well SS-25. This well drilled in 1953 had safety valves removed in 1979. The valves weren’t replaced because the well wasn’t considered critical. This decision proved tragically short-sighted. A root cause analysis later revealed microbial corrosion from groundwater contact. SoCal Gas also failed to conduct detailed inspections after previous smaller leaks. These failures contributed significantly to the scale of the disaster.

The leak’s impact on the local Porter Ranch community was profound. Residents suffered headaches nausea skin rashes and severe nosebleeds. Thousands were temporarily relocated. Schools were closed. The community’s lives were disrupted in unimaginable ways. The effects of the leak are still being studied. Scientists are still assessing long-term health consequences and environmental impact.

The Aliso Canyon gas leak wasn’t just a technical failure. It was a failure of oversight a failure of safety protocols and ultimately a failure to prioritize the well-being of the community. The incident spurred significant regulatory changes. New safety measures were implemented for gas storage facilities across California.

Today as we stand here at the site of the Aliso Canyon gas leak let’s remember the lessons learned. Let’s remember the community that suffered and the environmental damage inflicted. Let’s strive for a future where such catastrophes are prevented. The Aliso Canyon leak serves as a potent reminder of the importance of safety and responsible environmental stewardship. The smell may fade but the memory must not.
