Weren’t you invited to meet some courageous women? These are the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace. Their story is one of faith, reform, and unwavering commitment to justice.

In 1884 Margaret Anna Cusack founded this Roman Catholic order. She sought to address the pressing social needs of her time. Raised Anglican she converted to Catholicism. Later she became Sister Francis Clare of the Poor Clare Sisters. Her work soon led her to establish her own community. It became the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace.

Conflict arose with Church leaders. Cusack sought support in England. Cardinal Manning and Bishop Bagshawe assisted her. Pope Leo XIII approved her new order. Thus, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace was born.

Margaret Anna Cusack left the convent in 1888. The order’s survival then rested on Bishop Bagshawe and Honoria Gaffney. Some describe them as co-founders. Gaffney worked to ensure formal approval. The order was finally approved in 1924.

Honoria Gaffney later known as Mother Evangelista stepped up. She was a teacher drawn to Cusack’s vision. Mother Evangelista became the second Mother General in 1888. She guided the community through challenges. Her humility and dedication were admired.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace expanded their ministry. They addressed social service, education, and healthcare. Sisters worked with the poor. They cared for the sick in their homes. They provided housing for women and orphans. They established schools and hospitals.

Today the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace are located in three regions. These are the United Kingdom, the Eastern United States, and the Western United States. Their mission extends to places like Haiti. They continue to pursue justice and peace.

Margaret Anna Cusack’s emphasis on human rights shapes the congregation. The Sisters and associates pursue this goal. They seek a world where God’s reign is fully realized. They face the future with hope.

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Peace embody courage. They show creativity. They prove commitment. Their story inspires us to pursue peace. They seek justice. They collaborate with others. They live out their charism. They invite us to join them. They work for a better world.
