But who was Sir Theagaraya? Pitty Theagaraya Chetty Senior and Junior were the founders. In 1897 they established the North Madras Hindu Secondary School. It addressed the educational needs of the local population. For 25 years the Pitty Brothers supported the school. After their deaths it was renamed Theagaraya Chetty Hindu Secondary School. In 1931 the Pitty Family vested management in a broader committee.
Dewan Bahadur PT. Kumaraswamy Chetty was the first Correspondent. He was succeeded by his brother PT. Chengalvaraya Chetty in 1942. By 1947 the school had 1600 students. Management then realized the need for a college. They wanted to provide higher education to North Madras residents. P. Ramaswamy Chetty worked towards establishing this institution. It was intended to support weaker and underprivileged sections of society.
Sir Pitty Theagaraya Chetty Junior was born in 1852. He believed in quality education. He passed his B.A. with honors in Mathematics. He entered the tannery business. The PITTY stamp became known for the highest quality. He also set up a weaving mill. He believed people should wear clothes made by weavers. He won prizes at the All India Weaving Exhibition in 1909.
He was elected to the Corporation Council. In 1918 he was given the title of Dewan Bahadur. In 1920 he entered the Legislative Council. He declined the Chief Ministership. Instead he chose the honorary post of President of the Corporation of Madras. In 1921 he was knighted. Sir Pitty Theagaraya Chetty believed education was the solution to social evils.
