Ever considered how a neighborhood can outsmart the rain itself? Sinwol 4-dong stands here. It is a testament to human ingenuity.

Sinwol 4-dong is a neighborhood in Yangcheon District Seoul. It is not just any neighborhood. It is a place that faced a formidable challenge. This challenge was heavy rainfall and flooding.

Once upon a time Sinwol-dong struggled with floods. This was especially after the heavy rainfall in September 2010. 6000 buildings in Yangcheon District were flooded. The district decided to take action. They engineered a solution that lies beneath our feet.

I am talking about the Sinwol Rainwater Storage Facility. It is an underground tunnel that has changed the fate of Sinwol-dong. The tunnel is located 40 meters underground. It stretches 4.7 kilometers from Hwagok-dong to Sinwol-dong.

This engineering marvel can handle up to 100 millimeters of rain per hour. It can accommodate 320000 tons of water. The water drains from sewers into this tunnel. It flows to the Anyangcheon stream. This stream leads to the Han River.

Construction began after the devastating floods of 2010. It cost around 139 billion won to build. It took over seven years to complete. Since its completion in May 2020 the Sinwol tunnel has operated successfully. Over 600000 tons of rainwater has passed through it.

Thanks to this tunnel Sinwol-dong did not suffer damage. This was during some of the heaviest rainfall in Seoul’s history. The tunnel has proven its worth. The annual maintenance cost is about 600 million won. That’s less than the damage from flooding.

Sinwol-dong is also the birthplace of actress Gong Hyo-jin. She was born in Sinwol-dong when it was part of Gangseo District. She is known for her roles in films and television series. She is considered the queen of romantic comedies.

The story of Sinwol 4-dong is about more than just infrastructure. It is about community. It is about how a neighborhood can protect itself from natural disasters. It’s a reminder that even the most challenging problems can be solved with innovation and determination.

As we conclude our visit to Sinwol 4-dong reflect on the ingenuity displayed here. Think about the underground tunnel working tirelessly. Remember that sometimes the greatest solutions lie hidden beneath the surface. This unseen structure protects and serves the community above.
