Hidden within the bustling cityscape of Seoul, Sinwol 2-dong whispers tales of transformation. Sinwol 2-dong wasn’t always the vibrant neighborhood you see today. Originally, during the Joseon Dynasty, Sinwol-dong and its surrounding areas formed a cluster of small, rustic villages nestled against the slopes of Jeungsan Mountain. These villages, with names like Danggok, Koeumwol, Shindae, and Gatri, each carried their own unique stories and significance. Danggok, for instance, housed a city shrine where villagers held rituals, while Koeumwol earned its name, meaning “beautiful moon,” from the way the moon illuminated the town. Sinwol 2-dong, taking its name from the mountain that cradled it, literally means “New Moon,” a testament to its cyclical history of change. The very landscape contributed to the names of some of these villages. Sinwol and Gatri, for example, are said to derive their names from their resemblance to the crescent of a half-moon on the eastern side of the mountain. In 1914, under Japanese rule, the area underwent its first major administrative shift, merging into Gimpo-gun and becoming Sindang-ri, a name that combines “Sinwol” and another nearby village called Danggok. This marked the beginning of Sinwol 2-dong’s journey from a collection of mountain hamlets to an integrated part of a larger administrative unit. Then, the Gabo Reform during the reign of King Gojong brought about a further reorganization of the administrative district, leading to the transition from Yangcheon-hyeon to Gun. These shifts, though administrative in nature, reflect the changing identity of Sinwol 2-dong, its gradual absorption into the expanding fabric of Seoul. Fast forward to 2001, Sinwol 2-dong thrived as a bustling neighbourhood within Yangcheon District, boasting a population of over 156,000. This dynamic growth contrasts sharply with its origins as a sparse collection of mountain villages. The journey of Sinwol 2-dong from quiet mountain villages to a dynamic part of Seoul provides a glimpse into Korea’s complex history and its remarkable urban development. Today, Sinwol 2-dong continues to evolve, its story woven into the ever-changing tapestry of Seoul.
