“A haven of peace,” whispered the wind as it rustled through the trees surrounding Sint-Wivina-abdij. Sint-Wivina-abdij, also known as Groot-Bijgaarden Abbey, stands before you as a testament to a rich and tumultuous past. Originally a Benedictine nunnery, its roots trace back to the 12th century, a time when Saint Wivina sought solace by a spring west of Brussels with her companion, Emwara. Their simple retreat blossomed into a spiritual community, attracting other women seeking a life devoted to prayer and contemplation under the Rule of Saint Benedict. This burgeoning community became a priory under the watchful eye of Affligem Abbey, thanks to the patronage of Godfrey I of Brabant. Subsequent dukes extended their protection and granted the nuns lands and resources, stretching their influence across the surrounding villages and as far as Flanders and the Brabant Kempen. Sint-Wivina-abdij officially became an independent abbey in 1548 with Kathelijne van der Straeten as its first abbess. However, peace was often elusive. During the Dutch Revolt in 1578, the nuns were forced to flee to Dendermonde and later Brussels, only returning in 1598 to begin the arduous task of rebuilding their beloved Sint-Wivina-abdij. The abbey flourished once more, undergoing significant renovations in the 18th century, a testament to the resilience of the community. Yet, the winds of change, brought on by the French Revolution, swept through the region. In 1797, a decree ordered the abbey’s dissolution. The once vibrant Sint-Wivina-abdij was dismantled, its church destroyed, and its lands sold. What remains today are the poignant ruins of the abbey church and the Wivina Chapel, echoes of a vibrant spiritual past. Look closely and imagine the lives lived within these walls, the prayers uttered, the challenges overcome, and the enduring spirit of Sint-Wivina-abdij.
