Whispers of “Peerke Donders” echo within the towering wooden walls of the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal. Who was this man, revered within Suriname’s grandest cathedral? Let’s unravel his story, intertwined with the history of this magnificent structure. The Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal stands proudly in Paramaribo. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. Initially, the Catholic community gathered in a converted Jewish theatre, De Verrezene Phoenix, dating back to 1809. But as the congregation grew, the need for a larger space became evident. Thus, in 1883, construction began on the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal, right on the site of the old theatre. Designed by Frans Harmes, the cathedral was consecrated in 1885, although its towering spires weren’t completed until 1901. Imagine the dedication it took to build this massive wooden structure, the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The interior, crafted from unpainted Surinamese cedar, exudes a warm, inviting aura. Picture yourself sitting among 900 people, surrounded by the rich scent of cedar, sunlight streaming through the vast windows. This cathedral wasn’t just built for the elite. It was intended as a sanctuary for freedmen and contract laborers, a testament to the inclusive spirit of the Catholic faith. Now, back to Peerke Donders. This Dutch-Surinamese priest dedicated his life to serving lepers in Batavia, now known as Jakarta, Indonesia. His compassion and selfless service earned him deep respect. He returned to Suriname and his final resting place is within the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal, a fitting tribute to a man who embodied the spirit of service. The cathedral has three bells in its west tower, named Alfhonsus, Rosa, and John, their chimes filling the air with melodious calls to worship. The pipe organ, originally boasting 1,550 pipes, has faced its own trials. Theft over the years significantly reduced its value. However, restoration efforts promise to restore its former glory and its potential value of 10 million euros. The Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal has faced its own challenges. A restoration in 1977 proved inadequate. The building suffered from tilting and termite damage. By 2002, it required extensive renovation. Thanks to European Union funding, a full restoration was completed in 2010. Today, the Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskathedraal stands tall. It symbolizes enduring faith, resilience, and the spirit of service exemplified by Peerke Donders. It serves as a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Suriname.
